I picked up the registration packet for tomorrow’s Nike+ Human Race at USC’s campus. Judging from the energy around the booths, it seems like it’s going to be a pretty good race. Apparently, there’s 8,000 registered runners!

We got our Nike Dri-Fit shirt, complete with the Human Race logo. The shirts also come pre-stamped with a race number; they input that with your registration info, which is a pretty cool idea. As nice as it is to have runner bibs as keepsakes, it’s nicer to not have to wear one.

Nice shirts. Could do without Pete Carroll, though.

They also had a DJ spinning some tunes, which was a nice touch. Definitely amped up the energy. Hopefully they keep the music going during the race—last year, my friend Alice ran this race and she said Kanye West performed at the finish line. Pretty cool.

They posted the running route, too. The 5K looks pretty cool, but I must be honest: the 10K looks a little scary. Not only are we traversing the 10 freeway (through an underpass, I assume), but we’re going into the South Park area of downtown, then crossing the 110 freeway up Washington Blvd! These areas don’t have the best reputations, especially on a Friday night, but I imagine there will be safety in numbers.

I’m pretty excited. The best part is that since the run ends around 1:30am, we’re all planning to celebrate at the best 24 hour diner ever: Norm’s!

When I ran the LA Marathon in 2002, the best part of the race was through those neighborhoods. Residents from all parts of South Central Los Angeles were out cheering for us with pans of orange wedges, hoses foe those who wanted to cool off with a spray of water and general mweriment and support. I’m guessing midnight will be a little different, but I’m hoping to have a similar experience.

That actually sounds fun. Hopefully everyone will be cheering us, instead of staring at us like we’re insane. That’s what they do on Saturday mornings when we run the Venice boardwalk.

The best of luck during tomorrow’s run!!! Have a wonderful and safe time!!!

I’ll be looking forward to reading about your latest adventure.

Hope your achilles tendons are better, too.

Oooh pre-stamped Dri Fit shirts. I would take that over a bag of edible goodies 😉

Hope it’s a good race!
